3M faces huge PFAS liability as US court trial looms
Global chemicals maker 3M will be accused of a decades-long campaign to deceive the public about the risks of its controversial “forever chemicals” as it faces a series of bombshell legal claims worth up to $US40 billion ($58 billion)
The Wall Street giant is bracing for a landmark legal trial in the United States beginning in June over its use of the family of per- and poly-fluoroalkyl chemicals, known as PFAS. In Australia, the chemicals have contaminated at least 90 sites and officials have acknowledged PFAS has contaminated the blood of up to 98 per cent of the world’s population…

The Science on PFAS Rebuttal to 3M’s Claims Environmental Working Group
For decades, 3M was a leading producer of the toxic fluorinated chemicals known as PFAS. As early as the 1950s, 3M’s own studies showed that PFAS chemicals built up in blood, and by the 1960s, 3M’s own animal studies showed the potential for harm. Yet 3M continued to produce PFAS chemicals without notifying its employees of the risks.
Since then, there have been hundreds of studies
identifying the health risks associated with PFAS chemicals. Much more is also known about the wide spread of PFAS contamination. From federal and state data, EWG has identified more than 700 sites contaminated with PFAS chemicals.
Sizing Up Liability for PFAS Chemicals at 3M and Others Barron’s
An environmental liability appears to be keeping a lid on gains in several stocks, including 3M and DuPont .
PFAS, short for per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances, are a group of chemicals, manufactured in the U.S. from the 1940s through roughly the turn of the century, that can harm people’s health, according to the Environmental Protection Agency. States and municipalities are cleaning up sites involved in the manufacture of the chemicals, while governments are pursuing liability suits seeking money from producers.
In the first quarter of 2019, 3M (ticker: MMM) took a $548 million charge for litigation, which it said included $235 million for lawsuits related to PFAS. The issue also came up on 3M’s second-quarter conference call July 25.

Per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances – Wikipedia
Many PFASs were used in the mid-20th century in products and on materials due to their enhanced water-resistant properties, such as within Teflon or aqueous film forming foam. Only since the start of the 21st century has the environmental impact and toxicity to human and mammalian life been studied in depth. PFOS, PFOA and other PFASs are commonly described as persistent organic pollutants because they remain in the environment for long periods of time, and are also known as “forever chemicals“. Residues have been detected in humans and wildlife, prompting concern about impacts to health.[8][9] According to the National Academies of Sciences, Engineering, and Medicine, PFAS exposure is linked to increased risk of dyslipidemia (abnormally high cholesterol), suboptimal antibody response, reduced infant and fetal growth, and higher rates of kidney cancer.

Statement on Potential Intersection between PFAS Exposure and COVID-19:
CDC/ATSDR understands that many of the communities we are engaged with are concerned about how PFAS exposure may affect their risk of COVID-19 infection. We agree that this is an important question.
CDC/ATSDR recognizes that exposure to high levels of PFAS may impact the immune system. A National Toxicology Program review found that exposure to perfluorooctanoic acid (PFOA) and perfluorooctane sulfonate (PFOS) is an immune hazard to humans based on a high level of evidence that PFOA and PFOS suppressed the antibody response from animals and a moderate level of evidence from studies in humans (NTP, 2016). More research is needed to understand how PFAS exposure may affect illness from COVID-19.

Risk Management for Per- and Polyfluoroalkyl Substances (PFAS) under TSCA US EPA
Per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances (PFAS) are a group of man-made chemicals that includes PFOA, PFOS, GenX, and many other chemicals. Examples of where PFAS can be found include cleaners, textiles, leather, paper and paints, fire-fighting foams, and wire insulation. Certain PFAS can accumulate and stay in the human body for long periods of time. There is evidence that exposure to PFAS can lead to adverse health outcomes in humans.

PFAS in Australia The sites keeping toxic secrets
On a rise surrounded by bushland in Sydney’s north-west, members of the Westleigh Rural Fire Service have spent years training, putting out blazes in preparation for the real thing.
It is a peaceful spot, on the site of the old dog pound. Down the slope lies a walking trail and a creek, while the flat land next door sits vacant, awaiting council development into sporting fields. Each weekend, mountain bikers zoom through bush nearby.
What many in the area do not know – including the closest residents – is that the RFS site is chemically contaminated by toxins that have spread uphill and down.
Fairfax Media can reveal that the training ground at Westleigh is one of 10 sites in Sydney, 25 in NSW and 90 sites across the nation that authorities are investigating for elevated levels of per- and polyfluoroalkyl chemicals (PFAS).

3M Earplug Lawsuit Update (February 2023) – Forbes Advisor
Thousands of military service members and veterans have sued 3M, alleging the company’s earplugs were defective and led to hearing damage from loud sounds on the battlefield or during training exercises. To date, the vast majority of 3M earplug lawsuit claims have not been resolved. Of the 16 “bellwether” (test) cases that have gone to trial over the last three years, the verdicts have been split between the plaintiffs and the defendant—10 for plaintiffs and six for defense.
