Is Aspen Medical Affiliated With Greg Hunt $1 Billion Donation Sparks Public Attention
The Minister of Health, Greg Hunt, offered Aspen Medical a strong endorsement.
Aspen Medical was granted more than $1 billion in federal PPE contracts
despite having no prior experience with large-scale procurement.
Greg Hunt is an Australian politician who has been Minister for Health since January 2017.
He is a member of the Liberal Party and has served in the House of Representatives since November 2001,
representing the Division of Flinders in Victoria.
Since March 2020, Hunt has been in charge of Australia’s response to the COVID-19 outbreak.
Is Aspen Medical Affiliated With Greg Hunt?
The Minister of Health, Greg Hunt, has congratulated Aspen Medical for their successful parliament-related aggregate events.
While his division was negotiating with him for financially rewarded multi-million-dollar PPE proposals,
Hunt drafted and signed a nice letter of praise for a politically connected healthcare firm.
Although the papers had been drafted and signed, the deadline had been set for February 2020.
According to Department of Health documents obtained through the Freedom of Information Act,
the first PPE declaration was made on February 22, 2020.
Mr. Hunt’s letter had been sought, according to Aspen Medical, which confirmed it to Four Corners.
“It was prepared to assist Aspen Medical in filling job openings in the United States
and is permissible for Australian companies assisting in foreign operations,” a Hunt spokesman said.
The minister flatly denied any involvement in the company’s PPE contracts, including
“recommendations, evaluations, approvals, contract discussions, or purchase choices.”
Without a public procedure, Canberra-based Aspen Medical would end up with $1.1 billion in taxpayer-funded contracts.
Aspen Medical Was Given More Than $1billion In Government PPE Contract
During the pandemic, the company’s pre-tax profits climbed to more than $420 million, after losses of $7 million in 2018 and 2019.
Despite having no prior expertise with large-scale procurement,
Aspen Medical’s PPE contracts with the Department of Health were worth $500 million
more than any other government supplier, including those with industry experience.
According to a Four Corners investigation performed in collaboration with the Sunday Times of Colombo,
Aspen Medical is also involved in an international criminal investigation into corruption and money laundering.
Medical-Political Connection in Aspen
The corporation has had tight links with top government officials and the parliamentary Liberal Party for more than a decade.
Dr. Wooldridge is a director of Aspen’s Indonesia joint venture, which is worth $1.3 billion.
Dr. Wooldridge continued to attend Aspen Medical board meetings as an adviser
even after the Australian Securities and Investments Commission barred him from being a company director.
Mr Hunt’s spokesperson said, “We are not aware of, nor do we have any record of, any lobbying by Dr Wooldridge
on behalf of Aspen Medical in connection to any procurement.”
The corporation has also been a steady sponsor of the Australian Labor Party over the same 12-year period,
providing around $54,000 in donations and other receipts.
