Facebook and Google crack down
After mounting pressure on tech giants to act, Google has announced it will ban sites that “misrepresent, misstate, or conceal information” from using its advertising service.
Facebook’s chief executive Mark Zuckerberg has previously dismissed as “crazy” the idea that fake news disseminated on its site influenced the election.
But after Google’s announcement, Facebook also announced it will ban fake news sites from its advertising network.
The tech giants’ moves could cut a significant source of revenue for fake news sites,
but distinguishing between genuine fake news and satirical fake news could be a minefield.
Factcheck.org In 2012, FactCheck.org reviewed a sample of Snopes’ responses to political rumors regarding George W. Bush, Sarah Palin, and Barack Obama, and found them to be free from bias in all cases.
FactCheck.org is a nonprofit website that describes itself as a non-partisan “consumer advocate for voters that aims to reduce the level of deception and confusion in U.S. politics”. It is a project of the Annenberg Public Policy Center
