Overnight, 25 tonnes of controversial nuclear waste arrived in Australia on board a rust bucket ship. A 200-strong police escort, blue lights flashing, escorted it to the Lucas Heights storage facility in south Sydney.
If you didn’t know this was happening, you’re not alone. The government’s trying to hush the whole thing up – so we’re exposing the scandal. This Australian-made nuclear waste has been processed in France for ten years, and now it’s back in Oz. And there’s a heated argument going on about what’s actually in it.
The French authorities say it’s high-level waste. Our government says it’s intermediate-level. France says there’s still some plutonium in it. Our government says there isn’t. Everything about this is dodgy. So seeing as the government won’t tell us what’s going on, Greenpeace activists decided to document the waste’s arrival – from out at sea all the way to Lucas Heights.
The last thing the government wants is ordinary Australians getting outraged about this waste.

This shipment of waste is just a taster. Only a month ago, prime minister Malcolm Turnbull mused in public about turning Australia into the world’s nuclear waste dump.
But if a planned shipment between the French and Australian governments is this dodgy, imagine the chaos if more countries and private companies get involved. 72% of the public don’t want to see Australia become the world’s nuclear waste dump.
So in the wake of this shipment’s hush-hush arrival, let’s make ourselves heard loud and clear. Click here to watch last night’s action, and use our simple form to send an email to Minister Christopher Pyne, the politician in charge of nuclear waste, asking him to rule out turning Australia into the world’s nuclear waste dump.
Thanks for everything you do,
